There are so many concerns, doubts or questions when a person undergoes change in their life. One of the huge steps that most people will undertake during their life is the transition from campus to career. This short article is written to provide insights from an insider point of view for the benefit of students. These insights are not to be taken as a rule of thumb. However, they are written with the hope that students can prepare their way to enter workplace with more confidence.
Some popular questions regarding Campus to Career transitions are:
Where should I start looking?
Internet is a very good place to start. There are a couple of job center websites that are used by most Australian employers to advertise their interest; they are www.seek.com.au & www.mycareer.com.au. These services are free of charge and they also cater for all types of occupation. Another way is recruitment agencies. Although there are fees associated, recruitment agencies can become a good source. Recruitment agencies are usually industry specific; for example, there can be a special recruitment agency for Pharmaceutical jobs, Banking jobs, Engineering jobs, etc. Some of the big companies are also using these services. Therefore, it is good to check with recruitment agencies for the job opening that you dream of. Apart from these two sources, there is also Campus Internal Job posting. These job postings are usually available within each faculty in University.
Is experience important?
Contrary to what most graduate students would want it to be, unfortunately the answer to this question is yes. Australian Employers will most likely search for an experienced person.
Therefore it is important for job seekers, especially graduates, to gain work experience before entering the workplace. Internships or traineeship opportunities are also valuable to have although not necessary.
Let us not be afraid! As Jesus has often told us. Trust the Lord not by our own understanding because His way is higher than our way. At the end of the day, it really comes back to Him alone. Colossians 3:23 says that whatever we do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord we will receive the inheritance as our reward. We are serving the Lord Christ. I do believe that there will always be a job opening in the house of the Lord. So let us do our homework and keep on seeking. A journey always starts with a single footstep. Jesus bless your journey.
